⛵ Arkansas — Sailing Resources
Arkansas offers excellent sailing on large, scenic Ozark lakes—especially Lake Ouachita (one of the cleanest in the country, ~40,000 acres), Greers Ferry Lake, Lake Hamilton, Beaver Lake, and others. These USACE and state reservoirs provide good wind, beautiful anchorages, and a more relaxed cruising/racing scene than coastal areas. Expect hot humid summers, strong afternoon winds, and great fall sailing.
Boater Education
- Arkansas Game & Fish Commission (AGFC) Boater Education — Anyone born on or after January 1, 1986 must complete an approved AGFC Boating Education Course and carry the lifetime card while operating a motorboat, sailboat, or PWC. Free in-person classes and approved online options available.
Age rules apply (e.g., minimum 12 for boats 10 HP+, 16 for PWC with supervision options). Card is lifetime and recognized for reciprocity in many states. See AGFC site for current course schedules and approved providers (Boat-Ed etc.).
Marinas & Harbors
Lake Ouachita is the standout for serious sailing in Arkansas — large, clear, and surrounded by national forest with limited private docks (USACE lake). Greers Ferry Lake is another favorite with an active racing scene. Many marinas offer transient slips; call ahead as some are more powerboat-oriented.
- Safe Harbor Brady Mountain (Royal, Lake Ouachita) — Large full-service Safe Harbor marina with wet slips, transient slips (shore power/water at slips, Dockwa booking), dry storage, pump-out, and service. One of the best-equipped options on Ouachita. Phone: 501-767-3422.
- North Shores Resort & Marina (Lake Ouachita, north shore) — Full-service with slips, boat rentals, RV sites, cabins, and dry storage. Convenient for visitors exploring the lake’s many coves and islands.
- Mountain Harbor Marina (Mount Ida, Lake Ouachita) — Major full-service marina and resort facility with slips, ship store, rentals, and on-site yacht brokerage. Long-time favorite on the lake.
- Greers Ferry Lake marinas (near Heber Springs/Higden) — Lacey's Narrows Marina, Dam Site Marina, Eden Isle Marina, Heber Springs Marina, Hill Creek Marina, Fairfield Bay Marina, and Choctaw Marina offer slips and services. Popular with both cruisers and racers.
- Dockwa and Snag-A-Slip — Useful for finding and booking transient slips across Arkansas lakes, including Ouachita and Greers Ferry.
USACE lakes like Ouachita prohibit most private docks, which keeps the shoreline natural and the water exceptionally clean. Summer heat and humidity are intense—many sailors prefer spring and fall. Check lake levels and wind forecasts; afternoon thermals are common.
Marine Surveyors
- Linck Marine Surveying (Maumelle, near Little Rock) — SAMS® accredited (Yachts and Small Craft). Pre-purchase, insurance, and other surveys for Arkansas lakes and rivers. Central location serving much of the state. Phone: 501-231-9350.
- Capt. John McDonough Marine Surveyor — SAMS® AMS® with decades of experience (pre-purchase, damage, consulting). Serves Arkansas and surrounding areas.
Arkansas has a limited number of resident accredited surveyors. For the most current list, use the official SAMS and NAMS directories and filter for Arkansas. Many owners also use surveyors based in Missouri, Tennessee, or Oklahoma who travel to the major lakes.
Brokerages
- Ouachita Yacht Brokerage and Sales (Mountain Harbor Resort, Lake Ouachita near Mount Ida) — The primary dedicated brokerage serving Lake Ouachita and the Diamond Lakes area since 1993. Handles power, sail, houseboats, and lifts from all Ouachita marinas. Phone: 870-490-2134.
Arkansas has a relatively small dedicated sailboat brokerage scene. Most current sailboat listings appear on national platforms: YachtWorld and BoatTrader. Local marine dealers around Hot Springs, Heber Springs, and Mountain Home can also be good contacts.
Sailing Clubs & Resources
- Greers Ferry Lake Yacht Club (GFLYC) — Active, welcoming club on one of Arkansas’s best sailing lakes. Racing (multiple regattas including Red Eye), cruising, social events, and the fun Cleon Challenge (island course). Informal atmosphere — racers and cruisers mix easily. Excellent entry point for Arkansas sailing. Heber Springs / Higden area.
- Other active clubs — Beaver Lake Sailing Club and Grande Maumelle Sailing Club offer racing, cruising, and social opportunities on their respective lakes.
- Arkansas Sailing Clubs — US Sailing — Directory of additional clubs and organizations across the state.
Lake Ouachita and Greers Ferry Lake are the two primary centers for organized sailing. Many sailors trailer from Little Rock, Hot Springs, or northwest Arkansas. The scene is friendly and low-key compared to bigger coastal yacht clubs.
