Marinas & Harbors

California has some of the best (and most expensive) sailing in the U.S. — San Francisco Bay, the Delta, Monterey Bay, and especially Southern California with easy access to the Channel Islands. Transient slips are in high demand and can be costly; plan ahead and use Dockwa where available. Many facilities are more powerboat-oriented.

San Francisco Bay & Delta

Southern California

Transient space in California is often limited and pricey (especially SoCal and SF Bay). Many sailors use anchorages (Catalina, Channel Islands) or plan short hops. Check current availability via Dockwa or direct calls. Fuel, pump-out, and haul-out services are widely available but book ahead in peak season.

Marine Surveyors

California has a large number of excellent accredited surveyors, especially in the major boating centers (SF Bay, San Diego, Marina del Rey/Long Beach). Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories and filter by region for the most current options. Many owners get referrals from local yacht clubs or brokers.

Brokerages

California has one of the largest and most active sailboat markets in the country, with strong inventory in San Diego, Marina del Rey, Long Beach, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Working with a local broker who knows the specific harbor and conditions (e.g., SF Bay wind and currents vs. SoCal) is highly recommended when buying in California.

Sailing Clubs & Resources

California’s sailing scene is very active year-round. Many practical owner-operators participate through ASA schools, smaller clubs, or racing fleets rather than traditional large yacht clubs. The Channel Islands and Catalina are favorite cruising destinations from the SoCal coast.
