⛵ Connecticut — Sailing Resources
Connecticut provides outstanding protected sailing on Long Island Sound, with historic ports, excellent racing, and easy access to Block Island, Fishers Island, and the Rhode Island coast. Key areas include the Mystic/Stonington region, the Connecticut River (Essex), and the central/western shoreline. Strong yacht club scene and active one-design and PHRF racing.
Boater Education
- Connecticut DEEP Safe Boating Certificate — Most operators need a Connecticut Boating Certificate. Requires completing an approved 8-hour NASBLA course + passing the state exam (or equivalency for experienced boaters). One-time $50 fee. Conservation ID required first.
Courses offered in-person and online by approved providers. PWC operators need an additional endorsement in some cases. Carry the certificate onboard. Full details and approved classes on the CT DEEP site.
Marinas & Harbors
Long Island Sound offers many well-protected harbors and full-service marinas. Transient space is generally available but book ahead in peak summer, especially near Mystic and Essex. Many facilities cater to both power and sail.
Mystic / Stonington / Noank Area
- Brewer’s Mystic Marina and Mystic River Marina — Popular full-service options with transient slips, fuel, repairs, and easy access to downtown Mystic and the Seaport.
- Ram Island Yacht Club / Masons Island area — Good transient and club options in the Noank/Mystic region.
Connecticut River / Essex Area
- Essex Island Marina (Safe Harbor) — Scenic island marina with ferry to historic Essex village. Excellent transient facilities and highly regarded.
- Brewer’s Essex / Dauntless Marina — Well-protected, full-service with strong sailing community support.
- Cedar Island Marina (Clinton) — Frequently rated one of the top marinas on the CT shoreline. Good transient slips and amenities.
Central & Western Shore
- Norwalk Cove Marina — One of Connecticut’s premier full-service yachting centers. Deep water, excellent facilities, close to NYC.
- Branford area — Safe Harbor Bruce & Johnson’s and other options with good access to the central Sound.
Dockwa and Snag-A-Slip are useful for finding transient berths. Many marinas offer good protection from Long Island Sound weather. Fuel, pump-out, and haul-out services are widely available along the coast.
Marine Surveyors
- Atlantic Marine Survey (Barnaby Blatch, NAMS® CMS®, SAMS® AMS®) — Based in Mystic. Serves Connecticut, Rhode Island, eastern New York, and southern Massachusetts. Pre-purchase, insurance, and appraisals.
- Mystic Marine Surveyors — SAMS® Surveyor Associate providing pre-purchase and insurance surveys throughout the Mystic area and Long Island Sound.
- Johnson Marine Services — Long-established SAMS® AMS® surveyors serving CT and surrounding waters.
Connecticut has several well-regarded accredited surveyors, especially in the Mystic and Essex areas. Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories for the most current list and to match specific needs (sail vs. power, etc.).
Brokerages
Connecticut has a healthy sailboat market, especially on Long Island Sound. Many brokers are based in Mystic, Essex, and the western shoreline.

- Local brokers in the Mystic and Essex areas are particularly knowledgeable about Long Island Sound conditions and boats.
The strong one-design and cruising communities on the Sound make Connecticut a good place to find well-maintained used sailboats.

- Essex Yacht Club and Essex Corinthian Yacht Club — Active clubs in the beautiful Connecticut River town of Essex with racing, cruising, and strong community.
- Pettipaug Yacht Club (Essex) — Another solid option in the river.
- Ram Island Yacht Club (Noank/Mystic area) — Family-oriented club with excellent racing and social program.
- Masons Island Yacht Club (Mystic) — Scenic private club with great views and active membership.
- Duck Island Yacht Club (Westbrook) — Active racing club on the central shoreline.
- Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association (ECSA) — Umbrella organization for many CT clubs with coordinated racing.

The Long Island Sound racing scene is very strong. Many clubs welcome new members and offer social memberships even without a boat. Mystic and Essex are particularly vibrant hubs.
