⛵ Kansas — Sailing Resources
Kansas offers solid freshwater sailing on large reservoirs. The two standout venues are Milford Lake (the state’s largest) in the north-central part of the state and Cheney Reservoir (one of the best sailing lakes in the nation) near Wichita. These are practical, trailer-friendly spots for owner-operators.
Boater Education
- Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism Boating Education — Required for anyone under 21 who wants to operate a motorboat, PWC, or sailboat without being under direct and audible supervision of a responsible person 18+ (who has completed the course or is exempt because they are over 21). No one under 12 may operate a motorized vessel without direct supervision regardless of certification.
Approved courses are available online and in-person. A certificate is lifetime and recommended for insurance. Carry proof when required by age.
Marinas & Harbors
Kansas’ best sailing is on large reservoirs. Milford Lake (the state’s largest) has solid infrastructure and an active yacht club. Cheney Reservoir is widely regarded as one of the finest sailing lakes in the nation with a dedicated sailing association and excellent wind.
Milford Lake (Near Junction City / Manhattan)
- Milford State Park Marina — Full-service marina with slips (newer facilities), storage, rentals, fuel, pump-out, and maintenance. Good transient and seasonal options on Kansas’ largest lake.
- Southwind Yacht Club — Active sailing club on Milford Lake with racing, cruising, and social programs. One of the strongest sailing communities in the state.
Cheney Reservoir (Near Wichita)
- Ninnescah Sailing Association (NSA) at Sailboat Cove — The largest and most active sailing organization in Kansas. 160 wet slips, 10–15 moorings, hydraulic crane, strong racing program (including national championships), and excellent junior sailing. Known for great wind and friendly community.
Milford Lake has the most slip capacity and services. Cheney/NSA is the sailing jewel of south-central Kansas. Transient space exists but book ahead in peak summer. Many owners trailer boats from the Kansas City, Topeka, or Wichita metro areas. Other reservoirs (Clinton, Perry, Tuttle Creek, Wilson, El Dorado) have public marinas and launches for trailer-sailors.
Marine Surveyors
- Kansas has a limited number of resident accredited surveyors. Many owners use surveyors based in Missouri, Nebraska, or Oklahoma who regularly travel to the major lakes.
- Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories and filter for Kansas or the central Midwest.
Local clubs (Southwind YC, NSA) and marinas can often provide current recommendations for surveyors familiar with Kansas reservoirs.
Brokerages
Kansas has a small dedicated sailboat brokerage scene. Most activity happens through private sales or dealers based in neighboring states.

- Some local dealers around Milford Lake and the Wichita area occasionally handle sailboats.
Milford Lake and Cheney Reservoir have active used-boat markets, especially for trailerable and small cruising sailboats.
Sailing Clubs & Resources
- Southwind Yacht Club (Milford Lake) — Active club founded 1969 with racing, cruising, and social programs on one of Kansas’ best sailing lakes.
- Ninnescah Sailing Association (NSA) (Cheney Reservoir) — The largest and most active sailing organization in the state. Strong racing (including national regattas), excellent junior program, 160-slip marina at Sailboat Cove, and a very welcoming community.
- Perry Yacht Club (Perry Lake) — Sailing-focused club with wet slips, dry sail, racing, regattas, and ASA certification. Convenient to Kansas City, Lawrence, and Topeka.
- Other reservoirs (Clinton, Tuttle Creek, Wilson, El Dorado) have smaller clubs and sailing schools.
- Kansas Sailing Clubs — US Sailing
Cheney (NSA) and Milford (Southwind YC) are the two strongest sailing hubs in Kansas. Perry Lake serves the eastern part of the state. The short season and wide-open reservoirs make for excellent big-lake sailing with strong afternoon winds.
