⛵ Kentucky — Sailing Resources
Kentucky offers excellent inland lake sailing on some of the largest and most scenic reservoirs in the South. Lake Cumberland and the Kentucky Lake / Lake Barkley system (Tennessee River) are the two standout venues, with protected waters, deep anchorages, and a growing cruising community. The Ohio River also provides good options near Louisville.
Boater Education
- Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources Boater Education — Required for unaccompanied operators ages 12–17 for motorized vessels over 10 hp (including sailboats with auxiliary power). Marinas & Harbors
Kentucky’s two primary big-water sailing venues are Lake Cumberland (known as the “Houseboat Capital of the World” but excellent for sail) and the Kentucky Lake / Lake Barkley system. Both offer deep, protected waters and many full-service marinas with transient options.

- Kentucky has a modest number of accredited surveyors, especially around the major lakes and Louisville area. Many owners also use surveyors from Tennessee, Indiana, or Illinois who regularly work on Lake Cumberland or Kentucky Lake.
- Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories and filter for Kentucky or the Ohio/Tennessee River systems.
Local marinas and clubs (Lighthouse Landing, State Dock, Kentucky Lake Sailing Club) can often provide current recommendations.

Kentucky has a relatively small dedicated sailboat brokerage scene. Most activity happens through private sales or brokers based in Tennessee, Indiana, or Ohio.
- Search current listings on YachtWorld and BoatTrader.
- Some local dealers around Lake Cumberland and the Kentucky Lake area handle brokerage on a limited basis.
Lake Cumberland and Kentucky Lake have active used-boat markets, especially for cruisers heading to or from the Tennessee River system and the Gulf.
