⛵ Mississippi - Sailing Resources
Mississippi's Gulf Coast offers excellent protected sailing in the Mississippi Sound with easy access to the barrier islands (Ship Island, Cat Island, and others). Key hubs include Gulfport, Biloxi, Ocean Springs, and Pascagoula. The warm waters and relatively short fetch make it beginner-friendly yet rewarding for cruisers. Inland, Ross Barnett Reservoir near Jackson provides freshwater sailing and racing. Watch for commercial traffic, shallow areas, and hurricane season.
Boater Education
- Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) / Marine Patrol Boater Education - All persons born after June 30, 1980, must successfully complete an approved boating education course to legally operate a vessel on Mississippi public waters. The certificate must be carried onboard. Operators under 12 must be accompanied by someone at least 21 years old when operating a motorboat or PWC.
Approved courses available online (Boat-Ed.com/mississippi) and free in-person classes offered by MDMR Marine Patrol along the Gulf Coast (minimum age 10 to attend). Lifetime certificate once earned. Full details on the MDWFP or DMR sites.
